Complete Guide to Stainless Steel Motor Tubes for Submersible Pumps

By Apurvi Industries · Published June 2026 · 8 min read

The stainless steel motor tube is the structural heart of every submersible pump motor. It encloses the stator windings, protects internal components from groundwater ingress, and transfers thermal load to the surrounding fluid. Specifying the right motor tube — correct material grade, dimensional tolerance, and surface finish — is the difference between a pump that runs 10 years without failure and one that fails in 18 months.

This guide explains exactly what a stainless steel motor tube is, how SS 304 compares to SS 316 for borewell duty, the dimensional standards Indian manufacturers should target, and the quality checks every pump OEM should demand before accepting a shipment.

What is a stainless steel motor tube?

A motor tube (also called a motor shell, motor casing, or motor jacket) is a precision-machined cylindrical pipe forming the outer wall of a submersible motor. It typically sits between the motor end-bracket and the pump-end coupler. Inside the tube sit the stator laminations, copper windings, and the rotor assembly. Outside, the tube is fully immersed in the borewell water that cools the motor during operation.

Because the tube is submerged in continuously varying water chemistry — chlorides, sulphates, dissolved oxygen, sometimes iron and manganese — the material has to resist pitting and crevice corrosion for the full service life of the pump.

SS 304 vs SS 316 for motor tubes

For most freshwater and lightly mineralised borewell applications, SS 304 (UNS S30400, 18% Cr, 8% Ni) is the standard choice. It offers excellent atmospheric and freshwater corrosion resistance at a moderate price point, and it machines cleanly to the tight ID/OD tolerances pump motors require.

When the source water contains higher chloride content — typical of coastal-belt borewells, irrigation drawing brackish groundwater, or sea-near installations — SS 316 (UNS S31600, with ~2% molybdenum) is the right call. The molybdenum content gives 316 markedly higher pitting resistance (PREN around 24 vs 19 for 304). For aggressive industrial duty or pharmaceutical/food-grade pumps, SS 316L (low carbon) is preferred to avoid sensitisation at the welds.

Dimensional standards and tolerances

Apurvi Industries manufactures stainless steel motor tubes from 2-inch through 12-inch outer diameter (custom OD on request) in lengths up to 6 meters. We work to IS:6761, ASTM A268, and EN 10296 base standards, with the final ID/OD precision-ground to the customer's drawing.

Surface finish options

The surface finish you specify controls both corrosion behaviour and rotor-stator air-gap consistency:

Quality checks every OEM should demand

Before accepting a motor-tube shipment, pump manufacturers should verify each of the following on representative samples:

  1. Material test certificate (MTC) — mill traceability with chemical composition matching the grade ordered.
  2. Dimensional inspection — OD, ID, wall, length, straightness on every tube.
  3. Hydrostatic test — pressure test to confirm seam integrity (welded tubes).
  4. Eddy-current test — detects surface and subsurface defects on the OD.
  5. Visual and dye-penetrant — for surface cracks and porosity at weld zones.
  6. Hardness test — verifies anneal condition.

Common failure modes — and how to design them out

Most submersible-motor tube failures we have seen across the industry trace back to one of three issues: pitting from chloride exposure (wrong grade selection), galvanic corrosion at the end-bracket interface (mismatched fasteners), or fatigue cracking from rotor imbalance (out-of-tolerance ID). Specifying the right grade, demanding documented tolerances, and requiring full MTC traceability eliminates the vast majority of field failures.
